Fundamentals End, Bushcraft Begins

Advanced Bushcraft is for students who already know how to survive a night out and now want to know how to live out there properly. Over five days you move from improvised, get-through-it solutions to considered, durable ones: tools you make yourself rather than carry, shelters built to stand for weeks rather than hours, and a working knowledge of the plants around you as food, medicine, cordage, and material. The group is capped at six because much of the week involves close instruction on techniques that are difficult to demonstrate to a crowd and easy to get subtly wrong.

What You'll Learn

Tool-making runs through the whole course, covering the selection and processing of raw material, carving a working set of camp implements, hafting, and the sharpening and maintenance that keep an edge usable in the field. Plant work goes considerably deeper than identification: you will learn which species yield usable fibre and how to process it into cordage, which have genuine medicinal application and how they are prepared, and how to harvest in a way that sustains a stand across seasons. Shelter modules address semi-permanent construction, insulation, drainage, ventilation, and the integration of a safe internal heat source.

How the Five Days Are Structured

The first two days concentrate on tools and material, because almost everything that follows depends on having something sharp and something to lash with. Day three shifts to shelter, with each student siting and beginning a structure they will keep improving for the rest of the week rather than abandoning at the end of a session. Day four is largely plant-focused, moving through several habitat types and covering food, medicine, and fibre in the places those species actually grow. Day five is consolidation: finishing structures, processing what has been gathered, and a long debrief on what to keep practising once the course ends.

Rocky Basecamp works for this course because the material is genuinely there. Standing deadwood, workable green stock, bark suitable for cordage, and stone for edge maintenance are all available within a short walk of camp, which means the week is spent building rather than searching. Elevation change across the site puts several distinct plant communities within reach in a single day, so the botanical modules cover far more ground than a flat, uniform site would allow. The area also carries enough weather through the season that shelters get properly tested rather than theoretically evaluated on a dry afternoon.

Who This Course Is For

Fundamentals of Wilderness Survival or equivalent experience is a genuine prerequisite here, not a suggestion. The week assumes you can already make fire reliably, that you have built shelter before, and that a knife is familiar in your hand, because the instruction starts above that line and does not double back. It suits students who have taken a foundation course and found it left them wanting more, experienced campers who want to depend on their skills rather than their equipment, and anyone drawn to the craft dimension of these skills as much as the survival one. Expect to work with your hands for five long days.

Survival skills get you through the night. Bushcraft is what turns the same patch of ground into somewhere you could actually stay.

What You'll Leave With

You will finish having made a functional set of tools you carved yourself, built and slept in a shelter designed for extended use, processed natural cordage from raw fibre, and worked confidently with a set of regional plants for food, medicine, and material. More broadly you will leave with a different relationship to your kit, having spent five days discovering how much of it can be replaced by knowledge. Students take home their tools, a certificate of completion, and a set of skills that reward practice for years rather than weeks.
