As summer growth peaks and then begins to cool into early autumn, the forests around Rocky Mountain Basecamp offer their richest window all year for gathering the natural materials that traditional bushcraft depends on. This five-day retreat, led by instructor Maria Torres, departs September 14–19, 2026, for students who are ready to move meaningfully beyond basic survival and into genuine, sustained self-sufficiency.
Early autumn brings an unusual abundance of fibrous plants, hardwoods, and edible species all reaching their peak at once, giving students far more raw material to work with than earlier or later in the season when supply is noticeably thinner. It's the ideal window for a materials-intensive bushcraft course, and Maria deliberately times this retreat to coincide with that narrow seasonal peak every year.
Expect hands-on tool-making from raw natural materials, careful plant identification, and progressively more advanced shelter-building spread across five fully immersive days, closing with a short self-directed living exercise away from basecamp where the group manages its own food, water, and shelter. Group size stays deliberately small to allow close, individual instruction throughout every stage of the retreat.

Rocky Mountain Basecamp's dense forest cover in early autumn gives this retreat access to a wider variety of natural materials than almost any other point in the season, which is exactly why returning students consistently rank this as one of the most technically rewarding weeks Rugged offers.
Only 4 of 10 seats remain for this September 14 departure, and this retreat has sold out in each of the past two seasons. Prior survival course experience is strongly recommended given the hands-on, materials-intensive nature of the curriculum.

A compact sprint for anyone short on time before the season ends.

A beginner-friendly intro to fire, shelter, water, and navigation.

A holiday climbing camp for complete beginners, gear included.
