Instead of a crowded barbecue and another year of watching fireworks from a lawn chair, spend Independence Day weekend earning something you'll actually remember. This three-day climbing camp at Granite Peak pairs the long holiday weekend with Rugged's beginner rock climbing curriculum, led by mountaineering guide Sam Whitfield, running July 4–6, 2026. It has quietly become one of the most requested dates on our entire calendar, largely because people realize a long weekend gives them room to actually learn something instead of just sampling it.
The extended holiday weekend gives complete beginners enough time to genuinely absorb the fundamentals without rushing — knots, belaying, and route reading spread comfortably across three full days instead of being crammed into a single rushed afternoon clinic that leaves you with more questions than answers. Because everyone in the group is starting from the same holiday-weekend mindset, there's an unusually relaxed, celebratory energy to this particular session compared to our regular weekday courses, without sacrificing any of the technical rigor Sam brings to every group he teaches.
Expect small, focused groups working closely with Sam on real rock from day one, with plenty of deliberate repetition built in so techniques actually stick well after the holiday ends and you're back to ordinary life. Evenings are relaxed and social — shared meals at camp, no rush to pack up and drive home before dark, and plenty of time to swap stories with the other climbers who chose to spend their Fourth of July a little differently this year.

Granite Peak's forgiving rock and varied route difficulty make it an ideal setting for a mixed group of total beginners, all learning together over a relaxed holiday weekend rather than a single rushed session with strangers who never quite gel as a group. The site's abundant holds and predictable friction let nervous first-timers build confidence quickly, while still offering enough genuine exposure that nobody leaves feeling like they didn't actually climb anything real.
This camp is currently full, which isn't unusual given how popular this particular holiday date has become over the past few seasons.
